Anne Garrels first encountered Chelyabinsk—the focus of Putin Country—as NPR’s Moscow-based correspondent in 1993 and returned in 2012.  The contrast was stark, as post-Soviet Russia emerged from chaos to a semblance of stability and (for a time) relative prosperity.  Underneath, however, lay enormous social tensions, an “identity crisis.”  Here is a portrait of the “real Russia,” beyond Moscow, and insights into the source of Vladimir Putin’s power.
In her distinguished journalism career, Anne Garrels served as Moscow bureau chief and Central American bureau chief for ABC News, then at the U.S. State Department for NBC News, and at NPR after 1988, where she reported on conflicts in Chechnya, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, the West Bank, and Iraq.  Her first book, Naked in Baghdad, is a memoir of her time in Baghdad in 2002-2003 reporting on the coming of the Iraq War and the U.S. invasion.  She is the recipient of numerous journalism awards, including the George Polk Award for Radio Reporting and the Courage in Journalism Award by the International Women’s Media Foundation, both in 2003, and the Daniel Pearl Award in 2010.  anne-garrels
