In the fall, the Colorado Springs World Affairs Council’s annual all-day symposium for area high school students and teachers will examine Cuba. The decision of the Obama administration to re-establish a diplomatic, economic, and cultural relationships with Cuba—after more than 50 years of hostility between the two countries—inspires many questions: The symposium will seek to
- Explain the Cuban Revolution and its impact on the politics and society of the island;
- Examine the reasons for the long mutual hostility and reasons why American policy has now changed and Cuban attitudes seem to have softened; and
- Predict how a fresh start in relations with Cuba might affect American foreign policy in Latin America more broadly.
