Heather Hurlburt’s career has put her squarely in the intersection of politics, national security policy, and communication, and she is well-known for innovative leadership in strategizing and communicating for policy change.  She currently directs the “New Models of Policy Change” project at New America, and is a Senior Fellow, National Security at Human Rights First.  From 2008-2013, she was executive director of the National Security Network, making it a pre-eminent progressive national security message and rapid response resource.
Hurlburt served in the Clinton Administration for five years, as a Special Assistant and Speechwriter to President Clinton, and as a speechwriter and member of the Policy Planning staff at the Department of State.  She was the Washington Deputy Director of the International Crisis Group (ICG) and served as a Program Director at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.  She spent four years as a member of the US delegation to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
With Dan Drezner, she co-hosts the bloggingheads.tv show “Drezburt” and is a regular commenter on policy and politics in print, television and new media, including tweeting at @natsecHeather.  She co-authored US in the World: Talking Global Issues with Americans, published by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Aspen Institute in 2004 to help foreign policy experts and advocates communicate effectively with American citizens.  She is a graduate of Brown University and the George Washington University, and lives near Washington, DC.
