U.S. and Chinese trade relations are facing difficulties.  As the U.S. has threatened to bump up tariffs on Chinese goods, China promises to retaliate. What are the prospects of the U.S. improving its trading relationship with China?   How is this conflict related to other issues in the U.S. – China relationship?  What is the outlook on the relationship between the two countries?

Join us for a live webcast with The Honorable Condoleezza Rice, Former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor for a conversation on China Secretary Rice.

The webcast will be followed by an in-person discussions and Q&A with Dr. Paul Bolt, Professor of Political Science at the United States Air Force Academy, “Competitive Chinese-American Relations in an Era of Uncertainty

The Honorable Condoleezza Rice, Former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor

Condoleezza Rice is currently the Denning Professor in Global Business and the Economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution, and professor of Political Science at Stanford University. She is also a founding partner of RiceHadleyGates, LLC.

From January 2005 to 2009, Secretary Rice served as the 66th Secretary of State of the United States, the second woman and first African American woman to hold the post.

She also served as President George W. Bush’s Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (National Security Advisor) from January 2001 to 2005, the first woman to hold the position.

Since 2009, she has served as a founding partnerat RiceHadleyGates, LLC, an international strategic consulting firm in Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. The firm works with senior executives of major companies to implement strategic plans and expand in emerging markets. Other partners include former National Security Advisor Stephen J. Hadley and former Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, and currently residing in Stanford, California, Secretary Rice earned her B.A. in political science, cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Denver; her M.A. from the University of Notre Dame; and her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been awarded thirteen honorary doctorates.

Dr. Paul Bolt, Professor of Political Science, United States Air Force Academy




Dr. Paul Bolt is a Professor of Political Science at the United States Air Force Academy, where he has taught since 1997. He received his B.A. from Hope College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has taught at Zhejiang University and Baicheng Normal College in the People’s Republic of China, as well as the University of Illinois. In 2009-2010 he served as a Fulbright scholar at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Dr. Bolt teaches courses in Asian politics, defense policy, American government, American grand strategy, and comparative politics. He is the author of numerous books, articles, and chapters relating to Asia. His latest book, co-authored with Sharyl Cross, is China, Russia, and Twenty-First Century Global Geopolitics (Oxford University Press, 2018).
