SRDJA POPOVIC
Activist & Author
Co-Founder of CANVAS
Centre for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies
Military force has its limits – both in maintaining an autocratic regime’s control over its population and in toppling that same regime. CANVAS (www.canvasopedia.org) is a non-profit, non-governmental, international network oriented to educational work related to strategic non-violent conflict. Its hundreds of workshops, with thousands of participants from almost 50 countries – plus free online guidebooks on nonviolent strategies – are testament to a powerful tool in contemporary politics, in contrast to the radical violence of terrorism.
Srdja Popovic was one of the founders and key organizers of the Serbian nonviolent resistance group Otpor!, which was instrumental in toppling Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic in 2000. After serving in the Serbian Parliament from 2000-2003, he cofounded CANVAS. Foreign Policy magazine listed him as one of the “Top 100 Global Thinkers” of 2011; in January 2012, The Wired included him among the “50 people who will change the world”; and the Davos World Economic Forum listed Popovic as one of the Young Global Leaders for 2013. He and co-founder Slobodan Dinovic are regular visitors to Colorado College, and the USAF Academy.
